Walt Smith, Stamford Firefighter For 41 Years, Dies At 88

A 41-year veteran of the Stamford Fire Department Walter 'Walt' Smith has died.

A lifelong resident of Stamford, Smith died Sunday, June 30 in Norwalk at age 88.

He was born in Stamford on July 31, 1930, one of two sons, to the late B. Frederick and Florence (Schaffer) Smith. 

Smith attended Stamford public schools and graduated from Stamford High School. 

Following in his father’s and brother’s footsteps, Smith went on to join the Stamford Fire Department and served as a career firefighter for 41 years before retiring in July of 1999. 

Smith is survived by daughters, Kathleen Fera and Jeanne MacKay, his life partner of 35 years; Doris Wozniak and 7 grandchildren. 

In addition to his parents, Walt was predeceased by his wife, Sally (Winter) Smith, in 1983, three children; Susan Smith, Linda Smith Chioditti and James Smith; and his brother; Donald Smith.

A funeral was held Friday, July 5 in Stamford.
